Frequently Asked Questions
How many passengers can your airship carry?
Both the WDL model 1 and 1B airships have seating for a total of 1 pilot and 7 passengers.
Can your airship be used to carry heavy cargo to remote sites?
Yes, however, it is important to realize that, even though the airships look very large, the actual useable payload available to carry cargo and/or passengers is not that great. In fact it is very similar to the capability of medium-size military helicopters. Our airships typically have an available gross lift of approximately 2,800 lbs. at sea level. That means that while it is possible, it is not usually economically practical to use airships when compared to other forms of cargo transport.
Is there a risk of explosion with your airship like there was with the Hindenburg?
No. In our airships we only use Helium gas. Helium is an inert gas. When a gas is inert, that means it does not combine with other gases such as oxygen and therefore is non-combustible and non-flammable.
How far can your airships travel in one day?
Normal cruising speed of our airships is approximately 32 Kts/hr plus or minus the wind speed. Typical tour scheduling is for 250-350 km per day when we are relocating the airship from one city to another.
How easy is it to change the artwork on your airship?
Very easy. We can normally change company logos and artwork within approximately 20 days for a complete change over from one client's logo to another, including all ground support vehicles.
How big is the NightSign system of lights on your airship?
The NightSign measures approximately 26 feet tall and over 108 feet long and is comprised of 4,500 lights on each side in full color.
How often can you change the message on the NightSign?
Our NightSign System allows virtually an unlimited capability to change messages, allowing our clients greater flexibility in advertising at night.
Do you sell or lease your airships?
Both!
However, normally our clients show a greater interest in leasing our airships, complete with all necessary ground equipment together with full flight and ground crews.
Can your airship carry TV cameras and crew?
Yes, in fact that is one of the routine advertising roles we provide.
How much does it cost to lease one of your airships?
The fee structure for an airship tour is dependent on many variables such as climatology for the geographical location in question, time of year and length of contract. For these reasons each airship tour is quoted on a case by case basis.
For general discussion and planning purposes, you should expect normal hourly charges to be similar to leasing a small business jet with certain monthly minimum hour requirements. Normal airship tours require between 130-160 hours of flying per month to achieve the desired advertising impact.
If you and/or your company have a serious interest in leasing or purchasing an airship for your company, please contact our Sales Director at salesdirector@blimps.net who will give you a complete presentation for your specific needs.
